Types of Search Engines

Types of Search Engines - Chapter 3rd

After understanding the concept of working of Search Engines, you should also aware how many types of Search Engines we have and what are their importance.

When we generally ask somebody name 3-4 search engines, the common answer we get Google, Yahoo, Bing, MSN. The answer is absolutely correct, but here we analysis that people who are interested in SEO does not know the detailed list of Search Engines and their importance, which is very important.

Now please read it carefully that we have three types of Search Engines:
1.) Crawler-based search engines
2.) Human-powered directories
3.) Meta-search engines

1.) Crawler-based search engines

What is Crawler-based search engines?

Crawler based search engines are those search engines that use the automated software agents, usually called crawlers, which visit a particular website. They then read the information on the particular site and follow the links, which connect to perform indexing on the linked websites.

2.) Human-Powered Directories

What is Human-Powered Directories?

A human-powered directory, such as the Open Directory, depends on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire site, or editors write one for sites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted.

Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory. The only exception is that a good site, with good content, might be more likely to get reviewed for free than a poor site.

3.) "Hybrid Search Engines" Or Mixed Results

What is Hybrid Search Engines?

In the web's early days, it used to be that a search engine either presented crawler-based results or human-powered listings. Today, it extremely common for both types of results to be presented. Usually, a hybrid search engine will favor one type of listings over another. For example, MSN Search is more likely to present human-powered listings from LookSmart. However, it does also present crawler-based results (as provided by Inktomi), especially for more obscure queries.

In next chapter I will introduce you with the techniques and types of SEO. So keep reading...
